The question of exactly who “threw the first bottle” in the groundbreaking Stonewall riots on June 28, 1969 is unresolved, but there’s no doubt that trans civil rights activist Sylvia Rivera was on the front lines of the revolt.
When, during the riot, a friend suggested they duck out, Sylvia famously responded, “Are you nuts? I’m not missing a minute of this— it’s the revolution!”
Sylvia was a civil rights activist involved with the Young Lords and The Black Panther Party. Sylvia and fellow trans activist Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson went on to form STAR, the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, which worked to aid and support young homeless trans women and drag queens in New York City.
